June 2019 - The Blisworth Tunnel

Towards the end of our outward journey, we came to the Blisworth Tunnel.
The tunnel was constructed between 1793 and 1805. It was opened on 25th March 1805 and is 2,813 metres in length. According to Wikipedia, 14 men died in the construction process. The tunnel underwent extensive repair work in the 80's. Interestingly, you can see the new repairs are concrete rings where the original was red brick. There are stalagtites forming on the concrete rings but there aren't any on the original work.
Boats are able to pass each other but it's a tight squeeze! It takes approximately 48 minutes to travel through.

Rosalie was a 'stowaway' for a day and night and loved every minute as you can see by this beautiful smile on her face!
